Why a Micro Text Label Works as a Covert Feature
A micro text label carries lettering so small that it reads as a line, a border or a dot pattern at normal viewing distance. Its protective value comes from that ambiguity. A counterfeiter who copies the visible design of a label will usually reproduce the artwork at ordinary resolution, and the micro characters collapse into an unreadable smudge or disappear entirely under a loupe.
The feature is also practical to integrate. Micro text can sit inside a logo, run along a die-cut edge, or fill a background tint without changing the label's overall appearance. Because verification requires magnification rather than a special instrument, brand inspectors, customs officers and quality teams can check a suspect label quickly in the field or on the line.
Micro text is not a standalone guarantee. It works best as one layer in a stack of features, so that a counterfeiter has to solve several problems at once. That is how it is used across our security label range.
A Micro Text Label Combined With Other Security Layers
Holographic and micro-nano combinations
Product highlights in our audited range pair micro-nano labels and micro-text with holographic elements. A hologram gives the label an immediately visible optical signature; micro text beneath or beside it gives the same label a hidden layer that only magnification reveals. The two features fail in different ways, which is the point: a copied hologram usually loses its micro text first.
Micro-nano labels carry security structures at a scale far below what the eye can resolve. Exact structures and dimensions for this family are agreed per project rather than published as a fixed catalogue.
Tax stamps and wine labels
Micro text already runs across established product lines. On tax stamps it appears as rainbow micro-text, where the fine lettering is set into a colour-changing background so the characters are difficult to isolate and photograph. On wine labels, micro text protects high-value vintages where refilling and relabelling are the main threats. Die-cut micro-text packaging stickers are also part of the range for cartons and closures. You can review the wider portfolio on our security labels page or look specifically at custom tax and excise stamps.
Where Micro Text Fits in a Brand Protection Programme
Micro text earns its place in three situations. First, where the primary risk is relabelling: a genuine bottle, box or cartridge reused with a counterfeit label. A micro text label that is destroyed on removal, or that carries batch-level micro lettering, makes reuse detectable. Second, where inspection happens at speed: customs and distribution staff can confirm a micro feature with a pocket magnifier without sending samples to a lab. Third, where the visible design must stay unchanged: micro text can be added to existing artwork with little or no effect on shelf appearance.
It is a weaker choice when the only verification staff are untrained consumers, since the feature is deliberately hard to see. In those cases micro text is normally paired with a visible feature that carries the first-line check.
Quotation: Specifications Confirmed Per Project
We do not publish a standard specification table for micro-nano and micro-text products, because the variables that matter are set by the application. Substrate, adhesive, the size of the micro characters, the combination of features, the die-cut shape and the numbering or batch data all interact, and a generic figure would be misleading.
The quotation process therefore works in two stages. You send the application details: what the label goes on, how it will be inspected, what the visible design must look like, and which covert layers you want. We then confirm the specification point by point at quotation stage and quote against that agreed brief. If you are unsure which combination suits your product, describe the threat you are trying to stop and we will propose a feature set for review. Start with our contact page to begin the conversation.
FAQ
How is a micro text label verified in practice?
Verification needs magnification, typically a loupe or a low-power inspection microscope, and a reference sample or printed standard showing what the characters should read. Trained inspectors compare the suspect label against the reference and check character shape and edge quality, not just legibility. Because the feature is covert, it is normally checked at the point of customs clearance, goods-in inspection or an audit rather than at the retail shelf.
Can micro text be added to our existing label design?
In most cases yes, and the artwork change is usually small. Micro text can be set into an existing element such as a logo outline, a rule line or a background tint, so the label's visible appearance stays close to the original. The practical limits depend on your print method and substrate, which is why the final placement is confirmed during quotation rather than assumed.
Does micro text replace a hologram or other visible feature?
No, and it is not intended to. Micro text is a covert layer, so it does nothing for a buyer glancing at a product in a store. It is strongest when combined with a visible feature such as a hologram, and that combination is how micro-nano and micro-text products are positioned in our range. Choose the visible layer for first-line recognition and micro text for expert verification.
